Inuit Art Portal is a non-commercial initiative started in 2015 by Guus van den Brekel with the intention of sharing Inuit art, culture & news.
Guus is a Dutch medical librarian, working at the Academic Medical Center at Groningen in the Netherlands. With his skills in information management and social media he has taken upon a challenge of sharing Inuit art; of creating more awareness of Inuit arts, culture and history via various platforms.
While the main focus is on Instagram and Facebook there is also a presence on Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube & Linkedin, as well as a blog.
Latest project (ongoing): the Public Inuit Art Map involves actively searching, collecting, documenting and sharing public works of art by Inuit artists worldwide.
The Public Inuit Art Map currently contains the following layers:
- Public Inuit Art in the map (Worldwide)
- Galleries, Shops, Museums in Europe
- Galleries, Shops, Museums in Canada
- Not On Display Anymore
- Public Art Overviews in Canada (-in progress-)
- Canada Goose Retail Art Programm (Worldwide)
- Lorne Balshine Inuit Art Collection (at YVR)
- Iqaluit Airport
The Public Inuit Art WALL is a visual representation of all the artworks as a stacked wall, with the latest on top.
Every item contains: the number, artist, location and the Instagram link to the relevant post.

The definition of Public Inuit Art is (in my opinion):
“Any work of art by Inuit artists, that is (or has been) on public display, in a publicly accessible location with no fee asked, outdoor or indoor”
Using WordPress, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr & Facebook to explore, collect, publish & SHARE Inuit Art images and news, as it appears on various platforms on the Web.
The goal is to show as many people as possible the awesome art and cultural items about the Inuit, without any commercial intention or involvement.
