This is a project of Inuit Art Portal with the intent to collect and share the works of Floyd Kuptana in one place, beginning with his sculptures. A long-term aim is to create a comprehensive catalogue of the artist’s work.

My interest in Floyd’s work was triggered during my explorations to find public works by Inuit artists, and specifically by Toronto’s Gallery Arcturus.
Floyd’s sculptures have distinctive characteristics, shapes and forms that are intriguing to me.
Another encounter with several sculptures of Floyd while visiting the collection of Museum Cerny in Bern, Switzerland prompted me to find out more about the artist’s life and works.

With the help and support of Gallery Arcturus, a public art museum frequented by the artist and which has extensively shown his artwork of stone, paint and paper, I have created a plan for a public site dedicated to Floyd’s body of work, including:

  • sections about his life including a biography/chronology,
  • overview of his works in exhibitions, current and past *
  • overview of his works in collections (public and private) *
  • overview of Floyd Kuptana in the media *
  • overview/catalogue of all his sculptures
  • overview/catalogue of all of his paintings, pastels & collages ( no priority)
  • overview of all works for sale or on auction (currently or in the past) *

(sections marked with * are partly finished)

Many images & data were collected and gathered from the Internet from various platforms. We’d like to get into contact with people who have known Floyd and worked with him, including both friends and collectors, to discuss further development of the project.

The “Floyd Kuptana” website is created with Google Sites, and has dedicated domain name www.floydkuptana.ca  registered via @inuitartportal.

Short Term Goals

  • To publish the parts of the website that are almost ready, with a focus on the sculptures.
The visual presentation of the work has priority over the more detailed work of actually creating the descriptive catalogue itself. It still has to be decided how to realize the latter.
  • Introduce interested parties to this project and discuss the possibilities of collaboration and hopefully agree on the use of certain images and information gathered so far.
  • Maintaining and updating the existing sections, including sharing alerts on For Sale items as well as exploring how to promote the site.

Long Term Goals

  • To have a freely accessible, central location for information & overviews in one place, where the public can view all his works and read about them. First the sculptures, then paintings, pastels & collages.
  • To have a comprehensive catalogue, perhaps even a catalogue raisonné of his works
  • To ensure Floyd Kuptana and his work will be known by a larger audience, for now and in the future.
